The movies and event planning

Posted on March 3, 2009 at 10:49 PM

I thought I'd add a more personal touch to my blogging and reminense about my film days and how does it compare to being an event planner today. Well I certainly don't miss those 15 hour days and lying awake nights hoping to god I hadn't forgotten something I needed to have on set for the next day and reminded every second how costly a mistake is. And I certainly don't miss getting screamed at by some "insane" director who one minute ago wanted one thing and now wants something else. Ah yes...memories

I do miss the creative energy that goes with being part of making a movie. I miss watching something that once only lived on paper become real as the construction guys built the research offices for Hollow Man or built the offices for Jerry Maguire.

But event planning is an awful lot like making movies. You're taking someone's idea for something and trying to make it real. You're making something that once only existed as an idea into something tangible. It's making sure you've taken care of every little detail so your "director" or your client is taken care of. That your proud of your work and your client is happy with your efforts.

There's a certain satisfaction as well as a bit of sadness when a project you've worked and spent hours of your life on is completed...  finshed... and the lights on the set go dim or the lights in reception hall go out.
